David Crosby has been quoted saying several times as saying that Venice is the best vocal band in America today. After listening to the quartet's debut album, Born and Raised (Vanguard), it is easy to see why he feels that way. The band consists of cousins Kipp and Michael Lennon, and their respective brothers Pat and Mark. Together, they make simplistic but majestic, harmony-filled acoustic folk-rock. The opening cut, "That's the Way It Is," has the feel and prominence of classic Crosby, Stills & Nash, as does "Cool Me Down." These guys, however, are not CSN clones - but their vocals are just as good! Complimenting Venice's lush, melodious harmonies are its finely crafted songs. Standouts are the romantic pop-rock of "For A Kiss," the more sophisticated "Baby's Calling" and the poignant harmonies of "We're Still Here."
