With the release of their second single, "PEOPLE LAUGH," from their self-titled debut album on Modern / Atlantic Records, the seven members of Venice demonstrate that rock can indeed roll, but it can have a conscience as well.
Released due to the incredible demand and reaction that radio, retail, and the audiences at their live performances were having upon hearing the song, "PEOPLE LAUGH," is an emotionally gripping and powerful song. It confronts head-on the growing trend of insensitivity and intolerance that exists towards others who are less fortunate
"IS IT REALLY
SO EASY TO KICK A MAN THAT'S DOWN
CAUSE HE DON'T LIVE HIS LIFE LIKE YOU DO?
DO YOU REALLY THINK THE HAND OF GOD WOULD MAKE SUCH A SOUND?
TELL ME DO YOU THINK THAT'S TRUE?
PEOPLE LAUGH WHILE
PEOPLE CRY
DO WE EVER STOP TO WONDER WHY
TALKIN' ABOUT SOMEBODY'S LIFE
PEOPLE LAUGH
WHILE PEOPLE CRY"
--"PEOPLE LAUGH" VENICE
Inspired by the lack of sensitivity that some people show towards the victims of AIDS, VENICE'S KIPP LENNON (one of the two lead vocalists) points out that the song's message extends beyond those parameters. "It really applies to a general lack of compassion that seems to exist in our society towards so many minorities."
"All of our songs are based on things we see happening in real life," adds guitarist MICHAEL LENNON (Kipp's cousin). "We're not jumping on a bandwagon writing about the latest issue. We looked to the streets for inspiration for our songs."
And inspiration they found "PEOPLE LAUGH" is just one of the songs off their album that puts this band in a select category of artists that are committed to making a strong statement through their lyrics.
Produced by Danny Kortchmar, VENICE's debut album is garnering great reviews
*CNN SHOWBIZ gave it their highest ranking (5 stars) and had this to say: "Newcomers VENICE may be the first rock supergroup to hit the music scene since the 70s. The music is a combination of pop and rock influences, seen before in groups such as the Eagles and the Doobie Brothers. Every cut on this record is solidly written, performed and produced. Music that takes those of you who remember back, and those of you who don't on a pleasant musical voyage."
*LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS: "L.A.'s best kept secret is finally and officially out. The group's hard-driving and melodic style of rock 'n roll is reminiscent of such singularly American bands as the Allmans and the Doobie Brothers, but with a difference. VENICE sings about issues that affect the group and has the material to back up a definite point of view this is a band with heart."
*BAM: "Imparting high energy vibes to an action-hungry audience, VENICE cranked out songs like "Ball and Chain" and "All My Life." Harmony-filled songs like "Hideaway Hill" and "Pushed Her Too Far" were sung to CSN-like perfection. This was definitely a show that rocked the Roxy and left no survivors."
With "PEOPLE LAUGH," VENICE holds nothing back, and Bill Bartlett of BEAR TRAX summed it up in his review "If you haven't heard "PEOPLE LAUGH," you owe it to yourself to give it a listen. Not only are the four part harmonies classic but the message will strike a nerve.
